Epigenetics and Gene Expression

It is common to think just because your mother, father and/or grandparents had a disease or illness that you are genetically predisposed, too. While there is some truth to that, we now know you have control over whether or not those genes actually get “turned on”! Did you also know that the emotional experiences of your mother and father as well as previous generations can affect your genetics? Even the emotional state of both mom and dad at time of conception can have a direct effect on a baby's genetic expression!

What is in your control? Diet, lifestyle and personal environment (personal care products, cleaning products, air fresheners etc.), what you use on your body and in your home. Food, environment, emotional health and lifestyle choices create YOUR genetic expression.

Most disease and ill health is dependent on genetic expression or epigenetics. What you eat and allow yourself to be exposed to environmentally will significantly change the expression of your genes, and therefore your health. If you allow yourself the repeated exposure of toxic laden products in your home, as well as your food, then you are exponentially increasing the chances of those genes to be expressed.  Dr. Linus Pauling, winner of 2 Nobel Prizes, said “you can trace every sickness, every disease, and every ailment to a nutritional deficiency.” We, the USA, are the most overfed yet undernourished nation in the world. This is in part due to the farming procedure of big agriculture where we spray our foods with insecticides, pesticides, and other harmful chemicals. When we eat these “traditionally” grown foods it has a negative effect on our health.

So how do you keep those genes’ switch in the OFF position?

  • Eat a clean diet  - this means eating organic, non-G.M.O. whole foods.

  • Clean up your environment- cut toxins every where you can (makeup, cleaning supplies, soaps and shampoos, lotions, etc.)!

  • Maximized nerve supply - ensure your nervous system is functioning optimally by seeing a chiropractor regularly. (more to come on this subject)

  • Positive mind set - how we think about our health determines how we express health.

  • Optimal exercise - regular and consistent exercise is important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The subject of epigenetics and gene expression is a hot topic right now and more information is being revealed daily. Bottom line is keep your diet and environment clean and toxin free to live a healthy lifestyle!
